Description
The Academy House, also known as the Bratt Mansion, is located at 205 N. Morris St. The home was built around 1850. This impressive two-story hip roofed house is one of the most prominent dwellings on Morris St. Construction of Academy House is placed around 1849-50 shortly after the organization of the Maryland Military Institute by its founder, General Tench Tilghman. The Maryland Military Academy was begun with grand hopes of the school becoming a preparatory institution for West Point. The Academy House was erected as the superintendents’ s residence while the dormitory and other institution buildings were located on adjacent lots. Despite grand hopes of the institution’s founders, the main college building was destroyed by fire in 1855 and the Academy was forced to close. Through several transfers during the 1860ies, the Academy House was sold. It remained in the Bratt family until 1965. The current owner saw the home as a perfect showcase for his many art, rug and scrimshaw collections. The property which has been lovingly cared for is now being offered for the first time in more than 20 years.
